Mekong University- 14 Years of Construction and Development

 

 

New Development

Academic year 2013 - 2014 marked a new development of Mekong University after nearly 14 years of establishment. This is the second year the University changed the entire full-time training from academic year to credit training; and associated with Northwestern Polytechnic University of the U.S. to recruit students and train the postgraduate programs in Business Administration.

In 2013, Mekong University students won three gold medals in the 25th National Olympic Contest on Mechanics held in Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology. Thanks to that good result, the University was selected by the Vietnam Mechanical Association to be the host in the 26th National Olympic Contest on Mechanics in the Southern area. 

To timely meet the training requirements, the staff of Mekong University have been increasing both in quantity and quality. On its early days, the University only owned about 70 officers and lecturers in which nearly 10 people held doctorates’ and masters’degrees. After 14 years, the University possessed more than 250 officers and instructors with over 150 people holding qualified professors, associate professors, doctorates, masters' degrees (There are an average of 15-20 staff completing postgraduate programs every year). Therefore, by the end of 2013, the proportion of lecturers with postgraduate qualifications achieved in 60% of the teaching faculty.

Constant Development

So far, the University has had socio - political organizations: Party Committee with 5 Party cells (75 members); 15 Labor Unions under the basic labor union; HCM Communist Youth Union and Student Association. Activities of organizations have significantly contributed to the development of the University in the recent years. Mekong University annually receives nearly VND 500 million from supporters to offer scholarships for poor students with good academic results. In addition, the University also maintains the activities on culture, art, and sports. For years, Mekong University has achieved high ranks in the contests, and sports activities in the region and nationwide. Moreover, in order to gradually implement educational socialization, the University is now associated with enterprises to construct dormitories for students.

Identifying the importance of international cooperation, Mekong University has established relations, signed memorandum with universities and organizations in the Southeast Asia and the countries of Asia, America, Europe, etc. Until now, the University has welcomed 300 international delegations with more than 1,000 people. From such relationships, the University has implemented many projects, research programs, enabling the officers and lecturers to participate in conferences; study to enhance their professional knowledge abroad.
